Working with 3D Scanned Data using SOLIDWORKS Mesh Tools

The use of 3D scanned model data has evolved significantly in the past decade. When you need to replace or repair a part the traditional method of measuring tape and calipers simply doesn’t cut it anymore.

Now companies rely on 3D scanning to capture and leverage their existing geometry effortlessly. SOLIDWORKS has also evolved and gives you more freedom than ever to work with scanned model data. In this demonstration we’ll show you how to manipulate imported scanned data in SOLIDWORKS using the latest mesh tools.

Mesh Editing tools in SOLIDWORKS

Direct mesh editing in SOLIDWORKS allows you to edit BREP Mesh formats like STL with tools like Fillet, Chamfer, Mutual Trim, Knit Surfaces, Delete Hole, Delete & Fill, and more. The full list of commands which can be used on a mesh body are:

  • Shell
  • Fillet
  • Draft
  • Chamfer
  • Delete Face
  • Fill Face
  • Mutual Trim
  • Surface Knit
  • Delete Hole

Mesh Specific Tools

For commands that are Mesh BREP body specific:

  • Convert to Mesh Body
  • Segment Imported Mesh Body

Manipulating 3D Scan and 3D Printing Data

Tools such as Delete Face, and Delete Hole are great to have when working making a quick update to an existing STL file which may be damaged before manufacturing it with either SOLIDWORKS CAM, or on a 3D printer.
