Automated Tumbling for Hands-Free Powder Removal

The tumbling basket inside the Fuse Blast efficiently removes semi-sintered and loose powder from the parts’ surface using a combination of basket rotation, compressed air, and abrasive media.

The tumbling basket is completely hands-free; users only need to take their parts from the Fuse Sift to the tumbling basket using the transfer container and choose a cycle.

Fuse Blast uses an in-line ionizer to remove static charges from parts, releasing surface dust and media residue during processing.

Combining the mechanical effects of the tumbler with a directed stream of ionized air ensures powder-free parts that are clean to the touch, by preventing dust from re-settling after processing is complete. This advanced feature lets users take a part from powder cake to final product in 15 minutes with minimal hands-on labor.

Fuse Blast also features a rinse function that cleans the interior of the cabinet from powder and media to ensure a mess-free environment. In combination with the dust-free parts, this prevents additional dust from being released into the workshop and contaminating the workspace during part transfer and handling.

The Fuse Blast offers multiple pre-programmed routines for optimized results, no matter what shape or quantity of parts you’re working on. Users can walk away with confidence, knowing that blasting settings have been tested thoroughly to ensure optimal results.

Delicate Mode is designed to gently treat parts that would otherwise be difficult to tumble, ensuring there is no damage to parts with very fine features, thin walls, or that are very small.

For Nylon 12 GF Powder, which has a stronger semi-sintered shell, there is a designated setting that will remove Surface Armor and any loose powder while maintaining the integrity of the part. Most parts will perform ideally with Standard Mode, but users always have the option to tweak their settings for their own unique needs.

In addition to pre-programmed, ‘set it and forget it’ cycles, users can also opt to add a manual step to their workflow. For very delicate parts, or large parts that don’t tumble as easily, users have the option to take matters into their own hands.

Manual blasting using the ergonomic blasting nozzle, completely sealed in by the glovebox cover lets you adjust the nozzle, operate the air and media streams using a foot pedal, and clean large or delicate parts easily in just a few minutes.

The orientation of the blasting nozzle arm makes it comfortable for the user even during manual cleaning. For targeted and precise blasting, users can handle parts with both hands and control the blast stream with foot pedals, ensuring every bit of powder is efficiently removed. The Fuse Blast presents solutions for any type of part, in a compact, all-in-one package, so that your cleaning and polishing equipment can be optimized for your own unique workflow.

Though manual blasting options are affordable, they lack the ability to go one step beyond blasting for a truly smooth, end-use quality product.

Fuse Blast’s polishing function is an optional drop-in upgrade that can go beyond cleaning to surface finishing, enabling parts that are not only powder-free but smooth, scuff-resistant, and dye-ready with a professional, semi-gloss finish.

The Polishing System can be easily integrated into existing Fuse Blast machines for workflows where a consumer-grade finish is integral to success. Can I post-process with Fuse Blast only, without Fuse Sift?

Fuse Blast enables users to clean parts extracted from the cake, even if they haven’t been previously depowdered. This enables users to reduce the time spent on Fuse Sift to 5-10 minutes.

Though it is not mandatory, Fuse Sift is a critical part of the Fuse ecosystem that enables users to reclaim, mix, and store used powder for future prints, serving as the powder management hub of the ecosystem. For a seamless workflow, we recommend using Fuse Sift and Fuse Blast in combination to ensure a smooth, automated process for powder management and part cleaning in a contained environment.

For low-volume users for whom manual labor is not a blocker, Fuse Sift can be replaced by Fuse Depowdering Kit prior to media blasting.

How long does it take to post-process parts with Fuse Blast?

The typical post-processing time on the Fuse Series ecosystem should be around 15-30 minutes in total for most cases. This includes the following steps:

  • 5 to 10 mn extracting parts from the powder with Fuse Sift (manual)
  • 10 to 15 mn cleaning time with Fuse Blast (automatic or manual)
  • and/or (optional) 10 to 15 mn polishing with Fuse Blast (automatic or manual) [this step also
    cleans parts]

Note that some factors such as the material used, part geometry, number of parts, desired powder reclaim, and wear level of the media itself can influence the cleaning time required.

How much labor is involved in operating Fuse Blast?

Fuse Blast is an automated solution for part cleaning and polishing, therefore manual labor should be minimal in the vast majority of cases.

  • With the automatic part cleaning workflow, the user must carry the parts from the Fuse Sift over to the basket of Fuse Blast using the transfer container, then press the “Start” button for the automatic cleaning cycle to begin. For most parts, this level of cleaning is sufficient.
  • With the manual cleaning workflow, the user can immediately switch from automatic to “Manual Assisted” (fixed blaster arm) or “Handheld” mode and to manually clean parts. This mode is recommended for large parts or parts that are too delicate to tumble.
Can I put Fuse Blast next to my Fuse 1+ 30W and my Fuse Sift?

What about my other equipment? Fuse Blast can be safely located next to any product in the Fuse ecosystem including Fuse printers, Fuse Sift, industrial vacuum, and powder cartridges due to its fully sealed chamber and ventilated exhaust output. Fuse Blast can also be safely located directly adjacent to other common shop equipment such as CNC machines, lathes, and laser cutters without any negative repercussions to the Fuse Blast or any surrounding equipment.

Can I polish parts in Fuse Blast?

Fuse Blast can clean parts with glass media, as well as polish parts with specialty plastic media with the drop-in polishing upgrade.

The polishing function requires an optional add-on that can be easily installed by the in the Fuse Blast to enable this function.

Polishing parts will require to switch media in Fuse Blast, after which parts can be both cleaned and polished in one step.

Is Fuse Blast ATEX certified?

ATEX compliance is a European requirement for hardware that is intended to be placed into a potentially explosive environment. As Fuse Blast is not intended to be used in a potentially explosive environment, ATEX certification is not required. Given the internal environment of a Fuse Blast contains dust, Formlabs followed ATEX-related standards as well as the machinery directive for designing a safe media blaster.

How is Fuse Blast enabling a shorter workflow on Fuse Sift?

Fuse Blast is equipped with a passive media filtering system that separates the used powder from the blasting media. This prevents media saturation and extends media life, which ensures high-quality cleaning and reduces changeover costs. Thanks to this, it is no longer necessary to thoroughly depowder parts in Fuse Sift.

How clean do parts get in Fuse Blast?

Parts that have run through the Fuse Blast are visually clean and clean to the touch. No powder is present on visible surfaces after cleaning and parts can pass a ‘white glove’ test. Non-line-of-sight surfaces like internal cavities and passages may require manual touch-up using Fuse Blast’s manual mode and potentially additional brushes and tools dependent upon the printed geometry.
